Basketball Game Preview: San Ysidro Cougars vs. Mount Miguel Matadors

The San Ysidro Cougars will challenge the Mount Miguel Matadors at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, both will really light up the scoreboard.

San Ysidro is headed in fresh off scoring the most points they have all season. They took a 67-60 hit to the loss column at the hands of Mar Vista on Wednesday. The Cougars' defeat continues a trend for the squad, making it five in a row.

Despite the loss, San Ysidro got top-tier performance from Jordan Miranda, who posted 19 points and five assists. Miranda continues to improve, besting his previous point total in each of the last three games he's played. Another player making a difference was Gael Hernandez, who had seven points and four steals.

Miranda wasn't the only one working in the assists department: San Ysidro was working as a unit and finished the game with 17 assists. That's the most assists they've managed all season.

Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Mount Miguel, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Tuesday. They had just enough and edged Monte Vista out 68-66. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Matadors have posted since December 3, 2024.

San Ysidro's defeat dropped their record down to 2-17. As for Mount Miguel, their win bumped their record up to 7-9.

Everything came up roses for San Ysidro against Mount Miguel in their previous meeting back in May of 2021, as the team secured a 104-55 victory. In that game, San Ysidro amassed a halftime lead of 57-16, an impressive feat they'll look to repeat on Monday.
