Basketball Recap: Luella Lions vs. Mt. Zion Bulldogs

Even though the Mt. Zion Bulldogs scored an imposing 65 points on Wednesday, the Luella Lions still came out on top. Luella sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 67-65 win over the Bulldogs. That result was just more of the same for these two, as Luella also won the last time the pair played back in December of 2023.

Jaki Bell and Devante Burgest certainly did their best on Wednesday to avoid the loss. Bell scored 26 points along with four steals, while Burgest dropped a double-double on 17 points and 14 rebounds. That was a full 40% of Mt. Zion's points, marking the fifth time in a row he's earned more than a third of the team's points. Another player making a difference was Tyler Pennell, who scored eight points along with eight rebounds and two steals.

Luella's victory bumped their record up to 9-14. As for Mt. Zion, they have not been sharp recently as the team's lost seven of their last nine games, which put a noticeable dent in their 6-16 record this season.

Luella and the Warhawks will face off at 7:30 p.m. on February 2nd without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. One thing working in McDonough's favor is that they have posted big point totals in their last ten matchups. As for Mt. Zion, they will head out on the road to take on the Wolfpack at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Hopefully Woodland focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 17 last Tuesday.
