Basketball Recap: Fairview Piles Up the Points Against Ponderosa

You can't lose the game if you win every quarter, and that was precisely Fairview's strategy against Ponderosa on Monday. Given that consistent dominance, it should come as no surprise that the Knights blew the Mustangs out of the water with a 78-46 final score. The game was all but wrapped up at the end of the third, by which point the Knights had established a 25-point advantage.

Fairview found their leader in sophomore Gus Van Matre, who shot 86% from beyond the arc en route to 32 points and eight boards. The team also got some help courtesy of Trevor Ochs, who dropped a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds.

Fairview was working as a unit and finished the game with 19 assists. That's the most assists they've posted since back in December of 2024.

Loss or not, Ponderosa got some senior leadership from Aaron Crown and Nolan Ripp. Crown went 5-for-9 to rack up 10 points along with six assists and five boards, while Ripp posted ten points. Crown is also crushing it when it comes to steals: he's grabbed at least two every time he's taken the court this season.

Fairview has started the season off flawlessly and has a 2-0 record to show for it. The wins came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they've averaged 67.5 points this season. As for Ponderosa, they are on a ten-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-3.

Looking ahead, Fairview will be taking part in a tournament against Prairie View at 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The Knights will be up against the Thunderhawks' rather soft defense (which has allowed 70 points per contest), so fans could be in store for a big offensive performance. Ponderosa will take on Sand Creek in a holiday battle at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
