League recap: The Classical Academy tops Harrison to extend winning streak

The Classical Academy extended the longest winning streak in 3A Southern this week by beating Harrison, 34-7. The win marks sixth in a row for the the Titans.

Pueblo Central's dynamic duo of Zach Andrews and Damien Ruybal proved tough for Pueblo East to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Andrews threw for 216 yards and one touchdown and Ruybal had 116 yards receiving. Taner Hammond helped Pueblo Central's passing attack out by catching five balls for 39 yards.

Andrew Register was the most productive running back in the league this week. He ran for 127 yards on 21 carries as The Classical Academy lost to the Eagles. Teammate Peter Troupe added to the ground attack by rushing for 49 yards.

Ruybal made the biggest impact on defense this week as Pueblo Central lost to Pueblo East. The senior pulled down one interception and recorded one fumble.

David Ramirez's team's Kurt Rode and Felix Mestas have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. Rode has thrown for 1099 yards this season, while Mestas, a 6-foot-0 receiver, has 22 catches for 470 yards. Nikko Valdez from Zach Odell's team leads the league in rushing with 711 yards.

The top two teams in 3A Southern will face off this week when first place The Classical Academy takes on second place Pueblo East. Last week, David Bervig's team defeated the Panthers, while the Eagles bested the Wildcats.

Pueblo County made the biggest jump in the national rankings this week, rising to 6,384 from 7,372. The improvement came about via a 40-12 victory over Sierra last week.
