Softball Game Preview: Our Lady of Mercy Monarchs vs. Wellsville Lions

Our Lady of Mercy is 0-3 against Wellsville since April of 2022 but things could change on Saturday. The Monarchs will be playing at home against the Lions at 5:00 p.m. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.

Our Lady of Mercy took a loss when they played away from home last Thursday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Saturday. They put the hurt on Letchworth with a sharp 15-3 win. The high-flying hitting performance was a huge turnaround for the Monarchs considering their two-run performance the matchup before.

Meanwhile, Wellsville waltzed into their game on Wednesday with two straight wins... but they left with three. They blew past the Gators 13-2.

Makenna Dunbar made a splash no matter where she played. She struck out 12 batters over seven innings while giving up just two earned runs off four hits. Dunbar was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-4 with one home run and two runs.

In other batting news, Wellsville got a big performance out of Brynn Hallock, who went 3-for-4 with two runs, one double, and one RBI. Another player making a difference was Teagan Burke, who got on base in three of her four plate appearances with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.

Wellsville was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .375. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .312 or higher in five consecutive contests.

Wellsville pushed their record up to 11-1 with the victory, which was their 19th straight at home dating back to last season. The home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 0.9 runs on average over those games. As for Our Lady of Mercy, they have been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 5-3 record this season.
