Football Game Preview: Odessa Bronchos vs. Permian Panthers

Odessa hasn't had much luck against Permian recently, but that could start to change on Friday. After each having a week off, the two teams will shake off the cobwebs and hit the field against one another at 7:30 p.m. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, these teams will really light up the scoreboard.

As a matter of fact, Odessa put up the most points they have all season last Saturday. They took a 48-34 bruising from Ellison. Despite 59 more yards than the Eagles, the Bronchos couldn't convert that extra yardage to scores.

The loss doesn't tell the whole story though, as several players had good games. One of the most active was Andrew Rodriguez, who picked up 184 receiving yards and a pair of touchdowns. With that strong performance, he is now averaging an impressive 104 receiving yards per game. The team also got some help courtesy of Aramis 'Bo' Rodriguez, who picked up 100 receiving yards and two TDs.

Even if they lost, Odessa's defensive line still kept up the pressure with six sacks. Leading the way was Jason Sanchez with two. Odessa got some further help from Andrew Rios: he picked up a sack, forced one fumble, and made 14 total tackles.

Meanwhile, Permian entered their tilt with Cajon last Friday with three consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with four. They walked away with a 36-25 victory over the Cowboys. The score was all tied up 19-19 at the break, but the Panthers were the (much) better team in the second half.

Permian's win bumped their record up to 4-1. As for Odessa, their loss dropped their record down to 0-5.

Odessa might still be hurting after the 50-26 defeat they got from Permian when the teams last played back in October of 2024. A big factor in that loss was the dominant performance of the Panthers' Gavin Black, who rushed for 227 yards and five scores while picking up 9.1 yards per carry.
