Baseball Recap: Corning Find Success

It may have taken eight innings to finish the job, but Corning ultimately got the result they hoped for on Friday. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 9-8 win over the Willows Honkers. Give some credit to the fans of both teams: the last six times they've met, the home team has come away the winner.

Brandon Cordova was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He tossed 4.1 innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off four hits. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in strikeouts (five). He was also big at the plate, scoring two runs while getting on base in four of his five plate appearances.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Casey Long, who scored two runs and stole three bases while going 2-for-5. Another player making a difference was Bruno Lopez, who scored two runs while getting on base in three of his five plate appearances.

Corning's first victory this season bumped their record up to 1-7. As for Willows, they dropped their record down to 1-8 with the defeat, which was their 16th straight on the road dating back to last season.

Looking ahead, Corning will be playing at home against Los Molinos at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Willows, they will get a bit of extra time to process the loss as their next game is a ways off. They'll take on East Nicolaus at 4:00 p.m. on April 1.
