Softball Recap: Pinole Valley Takes a Loss

After flying high against El Cerrito on Tuesday, Pinole Valley came back down to earth. The Spartans fell just short of the Tamalpais Red Tailed Hawks by a score of 2-1 on Friday.

Mckenzie Ortega spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and one unearned) run on six hits and racked up eight Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts any time she's pitched this season.

At the plate, Pinole Valley saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Baleigh Watkins, who went 1-for-3 with one run.

Pinole Valley dropped their record down to 10-7 with the loss, which was their third straight on the road. As for Tamalpais, they have been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 12-4 record this season.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Pinole Valley will face off against Saint Mary's at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. The Spartans' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Panthers have averaged an impressive 6.4 runs per game this season. As for Tamalpais, they will square off against San Rafael at 4:30 p.m. on Monday.
