Softball Game Preview: Cesar E. Chavez Lobos vs. Kingwood Mustangs

The Cesar E. Chavez Lobos are taking a road trip to challenge the Kingwood Mustangs at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, the two teams will really light up the scoreboard.

If Cesar E. Chavez beats Kingwood with 20 runs on Thursday, it's going to be the squad's new lucky number: they've won their past two matches with that exact score. Cesar E. Chavez didn't even let Westside on the board on Saturday, marking Cesar E. Chavez's second-straight 20-0 shutout. The Lobos haven't had any issues with the Wolves recently, as the game was their seventh consecutive win against them.

Ahmani Hawkins and Ava Castillo made a splash no matter where they played. On the mound, Hawkins pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Meanwhile, Castillo tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. The dominant performance also gave Hawkins a new career-high in strikeouts (five). At bat, Hawkins scored three runs while getting on base in all four of her plate appearances, while Castillo went a perfect 4-for-4 with three RBI and two doubles. Those RBI were Castillo's first of the season.

In other batting news, Penelope Hernandez was incredible, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 2-for-2. That stolen base was her first of the season. The team also got some help courtesy of Jazlyn Eguiluz, who scored three runs and stole a base while going 1-for-3.

Cesar E. Chavez kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 14 hits. They are a perfect 3-0 when they post 11 or more hits.

Meanwhile, while Kingwood put up plenty of runs on Tuesday, the same can't be said for Humble. Kingwood was the clear victor by a 14-0 margin over Humble. Considering the Mustangs have won seven games by more than six runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.

Kingwood is on a roll lately: they've won eight of their last nine contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 16-2-1 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.3 runs over those games. Cesar E. Chavez now has a winning record of 4-3.
