Baseball Recap: Basalt Comes Up Short

Basalt extended their losing streak to five on Tuesday, dropping them down to 7-11. They were two runs away from ending the streak, but they lost an 8-6 heartbreaker at the hands of the Delta Panthers. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Panthers this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 13-2 on Tuesday.

Ryder Hutchinson made the most of his time in the batter's box despite the final result and went 1-for-3 with two runs, two RBI, and one double. Another player making a difference was Shan Donnelly, who went 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI.

As for Delta, they have been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 13-8 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.4 runs on average over those games.

On Delta's side, Landon Kennell was a major factor no matter where he played. He struck out 12 batters over six innings while giving up just two earned (and four unearned) runs off five hits. Kennell has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't tossed less than eight strikeouts in four consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, getting on base in three of his five plate appearances with one double.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Alex Mack, who went a perfect 4-for-4 with two runs, two doubles, and one stolen base. Those four hits gave him a new career-high. Gavyn Gibson was another key player, going 1-for-3 with one run, one double, and one RBI.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Basalt will square off against Resurrection Christian at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. As for Delta, they will take on Coal Ridge at 3:00 p.m. on May 7.
