League recap: Springwood climbs in standings with win

Springwood was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from seventh to fifth in AISA AA Region 1. The Wildcats beat South Montgomery County Academy 42-16 earlier in the week.

Edgewood Academy extended the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating Coosa Valley Academy, 62-14. The victory was the seventh in a row for the Wildcats.

Springwood's offense was tough to stop this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Brandon Hall threw for 141 and one touchdown and Blake Oliver had 47 yards receiving. On the ground Connor Gillespie chipped in 101 yards. Kaleb Northington helped Springwood's passing attack out by catching two balls for 43 yards.

Evangel Christian Academy's David Whitlow and Jay Grice have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. Whitlow has thrown for 737 yards this season, while Grice, a 6-foot-4 receiver, has 13 catches for 315 yards. Gillespie from Ronnie Sikes's team leads the league in rushing with 492 yards.

A big matchup in AISA AA Region 1 this week will be when Edgewood Academy takes on Crenshaw Christian Academy. Bobby Carr's team is in first place, while the Cougars are in third place.

The top two defenses in the league will face off this season when the Wildcats take on Crenshaw Christian Academy. Edgewood Academy has allowed 101 points this season, while Roland Jones's team has given up 98. The Wildcats allowed 14 points last week as they bested the Rebels.

Edgewood Academy took down Coosa Valley Academy 62-14 last week, the largest margin of any game.
