Basketball Game Preview: Independence Patriots vs. Greenbrier East Spartans

Independence hasn't had much luck against Greenbrier East recently, but that could start to change on Friday. The Independence Patriots will square off against the Greenbrier East Spartans at 7:00 p.m. Each of these teams will be fighting to keep a win streak alive as Independence comes in on three and Greenbrier East on five.

Independence is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Tuesday. They walked away with a 42-31 win over Shady Spring.

Independence's success was spearheaded by the efforts of Harmony Mills, who went 9-for-19 to rack up 24 points in addition to eight steals and seven boards, and Lacey Goodson, who posted 14 points along with five assists and five rebounds. The contest was Mills' third in a row with at least 24 points.

Independence smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 13 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in 16 consecutive matches.

Meanwhile, you can't lose the game if you win every quarter, and that was precisely Greenbrier East's strategy against Hampshire on Saturday. Given that consistent dominance, it should come as no surprise that Greenbrier East blew Hampshire out of the water with a 72-34 final score. The Spartans have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won 11 games by 20 points or more this season.

Greenbrier East's victory was their 24th straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 21-1. Those victories came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 65.5 points over those games. As for Independence, their win bumped their record up to 8-12.

Independence might still be hurting after the 62-40 defeat they got from Greenbrier East in their previous meeting on February 8th. Can Independence avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
