Basketball Recap: Lyman Memorial Comes Up Short

Lyman Memorial and Coventry squared off in some playoff action on Wednesday, but Lyman Memorial had to settle for second. They took a blow against the Coventry Patriots, falling 66-36. The Bulldogs have struggled against the Patriots recently, as the game was their seventh consecutive lost meetings.

Defeat or not, Lyman Memorial got some senior leadership from Jenny Lopez and Phoebe Carpenter. Lopez dropped a double-double with 20 points and ten boards, while Carpenter posted seven points in addition to 14 rebounds and six blocks. Lopez has been hot for a while, having also posted two or more steals the last 21 times she's played. Juliana Haynes was another key player, putting up two points and seven rebounds.

Even though they lost, Lyman Memorial smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 15 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 15 offensive boards in five consecutive matchups.

Lyman Memorial's loss dropped their record down to 9-14. As for Coventry, they are on a roll lately: they've won eight of their last nine contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 21-3 record this season.

Lyman Memorial does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for Coventry, they will take on North Branford at 6:00 p.m. on Friday.
