Football Game Preview: Sangre de Cristo Thunderbirds vs. Crowley County Chargers

The Sangre de Cristo Thunderbirds will venture away from home to take on the Crowley County Chargers at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Sangre de Cristo has given up an average of 29.7 points per game this season, but Friday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.

Last Saturday, Sangre de Cristo came up short against Hoehne and fell 44-36. The Thunderbirds haven't had much luck with the Farmers recently, as the team has come up short the last four times they've met.

Meanwhile, Crowley County came tearing into Friday's game with three straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 44 points), and they left with even more momentum. They blew past the Bobcats, posting a 58-20 win. Considering the Chargers have won four contests by more than 27 points this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.

Crowley County found their leader in freshman Levi Gibson, who rushed for 177 yards and four TDs while picking up 10.4 yards per carry, and also picked up 37 receiving yards and one score. Gibson is becoming a predictor of the Chargers' success: when he posts at least two rushing touchdowns the team is 3-1 (and 1-2 when he doesn't).

Crowley County was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 331 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 207 rushing yards in four consecutive matchups.

Crowley County now has a winning record of 4-3. As for Sangre de Cristo, their loss dropped their record down to an identical 4-3.

Sangre de Cristo took a serious blow against Crowley County in their previous matchup back in October of 2024, falling 50-6. That game was all but decided by halftime, at which point the Thunderbirds were down 36-6.
