Basketball Preview: Carver Tigers vs. Monroe Golden Tornadoes
Two dominant guards in Tony Montgomery and Justin Burns are getting ready to go toe-to-toe. The Carver Tigers will head out on the road to challenge the Monroe Golden Tornadoes at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Carver has been dominant on offense recently, as they've racked up an incredible 1,484 points over their last 20 contests.
In what's become a running theme this season, Carver gave their fans yet another huge win on Saturday. They took their game on the road with ease, bagging a 65-25 victory over Thomasville. Given Carver's advantage in MaxPreps' Georgia basketball rankings (they are ranked 63rd, while the Bulldogs are ranked 352nd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Carver found their leader in underclassman Tobiaz Tolbert, who scored six points along with 12 rebounds and seven blocks. Tolbert has been hot recently, having posted two or more blocks the last four times he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Jakobe Caslin, who scored nine points along with eight rebounds and five assists.
Monroe has been a dominant force so far, but they're in the middle of a mini-slump at the moment. They fell 59-49 to Dougherty on Friday.
Carver's victory bumped their record up to 19-2. As for Monroe, their loss dropped their record down to 17-5.
Carver lost to the Golden Tornadoes on the road by a decisive 90-71 margin in their previous meeting back in January. A big factor in that loss was the dominant performance of Monroe's Lorenzo Still, who scored 22 points along with five assists and two steals. Now that Carver knows the damage he can cause, will they be able to stop him this time? There's only one way to find out.
