Discovery Canyon is a perfect 6-0 against Pueblo County since October of 2016 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Saturday. The Thunder will be playing at home against the Hornets at 10:00 a.m. Discovery Canyon hasn't scored more than two runs for three games straight, a trend the squad is eager to reverse.
On Thursday, Discovery Canyon came up short against Cheyenne Mountain and fell 5-1.
Bella Holcomb put in work while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she tossed seven innings while giving up just one earned (and four unearned) runs off six hits. Holcomb was also big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with one RBI.
Holcomb wasn't the only one making solid contact as four players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Ruby Campbell, who went 2-for-3 with one run and one double. Lia Marrufo also deserves some recognition as she hit her first double of the season.
Meanwhile, Pueblo County had just enough and edged out Pueblo East 6-4 on Thursday. The victory continues a trend for the Hornets in their matchups with the Eagles: they've now won six in a row.
Kamdyn Toussaint spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered four runs (all of which were unearned) on two hits and racked up 13 Ks.
At the plate, Brooklyn Markus was excellent, going 2-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Aubree Peralta, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one double.
Pueblo County hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. They are a perfect 10-0 when they post two or more strikeouts.
Pueblo County's win bumped their record up to 14-6. As for Discovery Canyon, their defeat dropped their record down to 6-13.
Saturday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Discovery Canyon hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .319. However, it's not like Pueblo County struggles in that department as they've averaged .390. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Discovery Canyon came out on top in a nail-biter against Pueblo County in their previous matchup back in October of 2024, sneaking past 6-5. Will the Thunder repeat their success, or do the Hornets have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
