Baseball Recap: La Salle Academy's Luck Takes a Turn for the Worse on Thursday

La Salle Academy dropped their record down to 10-4 on Thursday, which also ended the team's four-game streak of wins. They fell 3-0 to the Cumberland Clippers. The Rams were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Clippers apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in May of 2024.

Jairo Martinez was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he struck out ten batters over six innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off seven hits. What's more, he gave up only two walks, the fewest he's had since back in April.

As for Cumberland, the win (which was their fourth in a row) raised their record to 11-4. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.3 runs on average over those games.

On Cumberland's side, not much got past Ben Jahnz, who gave up just three hits and racked up ten Ks to keep La Salle Academy off the board. Jahnz has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Aidan Ray was excellent, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and one double. Another player making a difference was Andrew Nocera, who went 1-for-3 with two runs and one triple.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. La Salle Academy will challenge North Providence at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Rams 3.5, the Cougars 2.5) so any runs scored will be well earned. As for Cumberland, they will face off against Lincoln at 4:15 p.m. on Saturday.
