Basketball Recap: Stafford Comes Up Short

After flying high against North Stafford last Wednesday, Stafford came back down to earth. The Stafford Indians fell just short of the Massaponax Panthers by a score of 36-33 on Friday. The contest marked the Indians' lowest-scoring match so far this season.

Despite the defeat, Stafford saw an underclassman step up: freshman Olivia Ferguson almost dropped a double-double with 12 points and nine boards. Ferguson has been hot for a while, having posted eight or more rebounds the last 13 times she's played. Sanaa Jenkins was another key player, putting up eight points and 14 boards.

Even though they lost, Stafford smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 11 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 11 offensive boards in three consecutive games.

Massaponax got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Taliyah Alexander out in front who dropped a double-double with 13 points and ten rebounds. What's more, Alexander also racked up four steals, the most she's had since back in January of 2024. Another player making a difference was Savannah Teel, who posted 15 points and five steals.

Stafford's loss dropped their record down to 12-7. As for Massaponax, the win (which was their fourth in a row) raised their record to 10-10.

Stafford has already played their next contest, a 61-27 victory against Mountain View on the 10th. As for Massaponax, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next matchup, a 46-43 win against Riverbend on the 10th.
