Recap: University Titans vs. New Smyrna Beach Barracudas
This season hasn't been kind to the University Titans, who are still winless after their 15th contest. They took a serious blow against New Smyrna Beach on Tuesday, falling 67-20. While losing is never fun, University can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Florida basketball rankings (they are ranked 637th, while New Smyrna Beach is ranked 177th).
Perhaps unsurprisingly given the score, University struggled to work together and finished the game with only an assist. They were crushed by their opponents in that department as New Smyrna Beach posted 14 assists.
New Smyrna Beach's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Selecia Richburgh led the charge by scoring 21 points along with three steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Richburgh has scored all season. Corrin Austell was another key contributor, scoring 16 points along with three steals.
University's defeat was their seventh straight at home dating back to last season, which dropped their record down to 0-15. That rough patch could be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they only averaged 21.0 points per game. As for New Smyrna Beach, the victory was the fourth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 9-5.
University will play host again and welcome Seabreeze, where tip off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Seabreeze is coming into the contest on a four-game losing streak. New Smyrna Beach will be staying on the road on Saturday to face off against DeLand at 2:30 p.m. on January 20th. DeLand and New Smyrna Beach are at an even 4-4 over their past eight head-to-heads.
