Baseball Recap: South Brunswick Comes Up Short

South Brunswick extended their losing streak to three on Thursday, dropping their season record down to 1-11 in the process. They came up short against the South Plainfield Tigers, falling 8-2. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Vikings of the 10-9 loss they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in May of 2024.

As for South Plainfield, the victory was the fifth in a row for them, bringing their record up to 9-3. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.2 runs on average over those games.

For South Plainfield's part, Aiden McCarthy spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned (and one unearned) run on two hits and racked up six Ks. McCarthy has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than one walk in four consecutive appearances.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Ryan Balent, who went 3-for-4 with two runs and one RBI. Those three hits gave him a new career-high. Chris Loniewski was another key player, going 1-for-2 with two RBI and one run.

Coming up, South Plainfield will square off against Red Bank Catholic at 11:00 a.m. on Friday. South Brunswick will be paying especially close attention to the Tigers' match: after the Tigers face off against the Caseys, they'll take on South Brunswick again at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday.
