Softball Recap: Winn Takes a Loss

Winn managed to slip by Southside the last time these teams faced off, but didn't have those same answers this time around. The Winn Mavericks lost 12-6 to the Southside Cardinals on Tuesday. The Mavericks were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Cardinals apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in March of 2024.

Mayte Figueroa was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. On the mound, she tossed six innings while giving up three earned (and nine unearned) runs off five hits. Figueroa was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs while going 2-for-4.

In other batting news, Julee Salinas was cooking despite her team's loss, going a perfect 4-for-4 with four RBI and two doubles. The dominant performance gave her a new career-high in hits. Lilian Hurtado was another key player, scoring two runs while going 1-for-3.

Even though they lost, Winn kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. That's the most hits they've managed all season.

Winn's defeat dropped their record down to 3-12. As for Southside, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 11-5.

Winn has already played their next match (against Non Varsity Opponent), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing. As for Southside, they will take on Southwest Legacy at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Southside is facing Southwest Legacy at the right time seeing as Southwest Legacy is stuck on a four-game losing streak.
