Softball Game Preview: Fuquay - Varina Bengals vs. Willow Spring Storm

The Fuquay - Varina Bengals will venture away from home to square off against the Willow Spring Storm at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. Fuquay - Varina is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.5 runs per game this season.

While Fuquay - Varina's victory against Clayton wasn't quite the blowout it was the last time the pair played, they still came out on top. The Bengals skirted past the Comets 4-2. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Bengals have posted since March 25th.

Kylie McGrogan spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned runs on six hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in 11 consecutive appearances.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Chloe Webb, who went a perfect 4-for-4 with three runs and one triple. Those three runs gave her a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Julie Selig, who went 2-for-4 with one run, one double, and one RBI.

Meanwhile, Willow Spring fell victim to Corinth Holders and their airtight pitching crew on Tuesday. They fell just short of the Pirates by a score of 2-0. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest defeat the Storm have suffered since March 25th.

Willow Spring also let their pitcher toss all seven innings and she was also dialed-in: Savannah Callis gave up just two earned runs on 11 hits and racked up nine Ks.

Fuquay - Varina has been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 12-6 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 12.0 runs over those games. As for Willow Spring, their loss dropped their record down to 10-10.

Fuquay - Varina came out on top in a nail-biter against Willow Spring in their previous matchup back in March, sneaking past 5-3. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Bengals since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
