Baseball Game Preview: Mt. Vernon Wildcats vs. Washington Hatchets

Mt. Vernon is 2-8 against Washington since May of 2016 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Tuesday. The Wildcats will host the Hatchets at 7:00 p.m. Both teams took a loss in their last game, so they'll have plenty of motivation to get the 'W'.

Mt. Vernon came into this matchup off a tough six-run loss on Tuesday. This time they kept things ultra-competitive, but unfortunately the final result was the same. They fell just short of Carmi-White County by a score of 7-5 on Monday. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest defeat the Wildcats have suffered since May 7, 2024.

Nathan Howard was huge no matter where he played even without the win. He struck out six batters over four innings while giving up just two earned runs off five hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks any time he's pitched this season. He was also big at the plate, scoring a run while getting on base in all four of his plate appearances.

Howard wasn't the only one making solid contact as five players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Jack Campbell, who scored a run while going 1-for-3.

Meanwhile, Washington was not able to break out of their rough patch on Saturday as the team picked up their fifth straight loss dating back to last season. They were a single run away from ending the streak, but they lost a 6-5 heartbreaker at the hands of Jennings County.

Washington's defeat dropped their record down to 0-4. As for Mt. Vernon, they now have a losing record of 1-2.
