Del Norte is 0-10 against West Mesa since March of 2017 but things could change on Thursday. The Del Norte Knights are taking a road trip to face off against the West Mesa Mustangs at 3:30 p.m. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, the two teams will really light up the scoreboard.
Del Norte is headed into Thursday's game looking for a big change in momentum after dropping their tenth straight game dating back to last season on Wednesday. They were a single run away from ending the streak, but they lost a 24-23 heartbreaker at the hands of Highland. Give some credit to the fans of both teams: the last four times they've met, the home team has come away the winner.
Timika Segay made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and scored two runs and stole Three bases. while going 4-for-5.
Even though they lost, Del Norte always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .688. The last time their OBP was this high was back in February of 2024.
Meanwhile, while West Mesa put up plenty of runs on Saturday, the same can't be said for Highland. West Mesa was the clear victors by a 20-0 margin over Highland. The Mustangs' hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.
Trinity 'Toots' Bazan was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she struck out nine batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and not a single walk). Bazan was also stellar in the batter's box, going a perfect 2-for-2 with three runs, three RBI, and one triple. That triple was her first of the season.
In other batting news, Mya Baca was a standout: she fired off two home runs, seven RBI, and three runs while going 3-for-3. With that strong performance, she is now averaging an impressive 3.2 RBI per game. The team also got some help courtesy of Christina ' Ocho' Perez, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run, three runs, and three RBI.
Del Norte's loss dropped their record down to 0-3. As for West Mesa, their win ended a five-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 2-2.
Thursday's match will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Del Norte hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .462. However, it's not like West Mesa struggles in that department as they've averaged .415. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Del Norte might still be hurting after the 11-3 defeat they got from West Mesa in their previous matchup back in March of 2024. Can Del Norte avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
