Pine Grove has gone a perfect 10-0 against Mahanoy Area recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Thursday. The Cardinals will challenge the Golden Bears at 4:00 p.m. Pine Grove is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.9 runs per game this season.
Pine Grove is probably headed into the contest with a chip on their shoulder considering North Schuylkill just ended the team's ten-game winning streak on Tuesday. They fell just short of the Spartans by a score of 2-0. The game marked the first time this season in which the Cardinals were not able to get on the board.
Pine Grove saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Madison Shiffer, who went 1-for-3 with one double.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Mahanoy Area). They blew past Our Lady of Lourdes Regional 28-12 on Tuesday. The Golden Bears might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won four matches by ten runs or more this season.
Lilly Carl made a splash no matter where she played. She tossed six innings while giving up three earned (and four unearned) runs off seven hits. The dominant performance also gave her a new career-high in strikeouts (five). She was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-6 with three runs and one RBI.
In other batting news, Naomi Kowalick was incredible, going 4-for-7 with one home run, nine RBI, and four runs. She continues to improve, besting her previous run total in each of the last three games she's played. Ella Brode was another key player, getting on base in six of her seven plate appearances with four runs, two RBI, and one double.
Mahanoy Area's win ended a four-game drought on the road and puts them at 5-8. As for Pine Grove, their loss dropped their record down to 15-2.
Mahanoy Area's hitters will have their work cut out for them on Thursday. Pine Grove has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 9.9 strikeouts per game. It's a different story for Mahanoy Area, though, as they've been averaging only 2.6 strikeouts. Will Pine Grove keep running through batters, or will the Golden Bears buck the trend?
Everything went Pine Grove's way against Mahanoy Area when the teams last played on April 14th, as Pine Grove made off with a 10-0 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Cardinals since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
