Volleyball Recap: Somersworth Takes Down Ranked Souhegan

Somersworth faced Souhegan in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Friday. The Toppers were the clear victors by a 3-0 margin over the Sabers. The Toppers have beaten the Sabers the last four times they've met, but they better watch out: this was the closest the Sabers has come to flipping the script.

While Somersworth won a shutout, things came down to the wire in the third set they played. The final score came out to 25-17, 25-17, 25-23.

Emily Runions paced Somersworth's offense, picking up nine kills. Runions got some help from Kylie Pettengill and her 27 assists. Finally, Paige Demers kept Somersworth's defense grounded, leading the team with six blocks.

Somersworth's win bumped their record up to 9-1. As for Souhegan, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 7-3.

We've got plenty of inter-league action coming up soon. Somersworth will take on rival Kingswood at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. Meanwhile, Souhegan is set to challenge their familiar foe Manchester Memorial at 6:00 p.m. on Monday.
