Basketball Recap: Boyd County Falls Despite Big Games from Addison Birmeier and Kyla Mccarthy (Class of 2027)

Boyd County was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their 22nd straight loss dating back to last season. They lost 52-30 to the Niobrara/Verdigre Cougars. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Spartans of the 72-47 defeat they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in February of 2024.

Despite the loss, Boyd County had strong showings from Kyla Mccarthy (Class Of 2027), who posted 11 points along with five rebounds and five steals, and Addison Birmeier, who had four points and seven boards. The dominant performance gave Mccarthy (Class Of 2027) a new career-high in steals. Madilynn Nolan also deserves some recognition as she scored her first point of the season.

Niobrara/Verdigre found their leader in sophomore Delani Runnels, who scored 22 points in addition to six steals and five rebounds. The matchup was Runnels' third in a row with at least 15 points. Taylen Stark was another key player, putting up nine points along with seven steals and six boards.

Boyd County's defeat dropped their record down to 0-21. As for Niobrara/Verdigre, their win bumped their record up to 15-7.

As of now, neither Boyd County nor Niobrara/Verdigre have any future games scheduled.
