Central is 1-9 against Vero Beach since March of 2018 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Friday. The Central Cobras will head out to square off against the Vero Beach Indians at 7:00 p.m. Central is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7 runs per game this season.
Last Tuesday, Central didn't have quite enough to beat John Carroll Catholic and fell 4-3. The Cobras have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Justin Glickman was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he tossed five innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off three hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than one earned run any time he's pitched this season.
At the plate, Central saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Dominick Grimaldi, who scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-2.
Meanwhile, Vero Beach put another one in the bag on Thursday to keep their perfect season alive. They had just enough and edged out Merritt Island 2-0. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Indians have posted since March 21, 2024.
Jace Romans was excellent, going 1-for-3 with one triple, one run, and one RBI. That triple marked the first that he's hit this season.
Vero Beach hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now struck out at most four strikeouts every time they've taken the field this season.
Vero Beach's win was their 16th straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 4-0. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 7.1 runs over those games. As for Central, their defeat dropped their record down to 5-2-1.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Friday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Central has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 9.4 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Vero Beach struggles in that department as they've been averaging 11.5 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Central came up short against Vero Beach in their previous meeting back in April of 2024, falling 7-2. Can Central avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
