Basketball Recap: Sonora Takes a Loss

Sonora saw some tournament action on Friday. They took a 59-55 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Murrieta Valley Nighthawks. While losing is never fun, the Raiders can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 777th, while the Nighthawks are ranked 166th).

Murrieta Valley's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Jaizahn Lewis, who went 6 for 11 on his way to 18 points and six rebounds. Lewis' afternoon made it nine games in a row in which he has scored at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Justin Lara, who went 5 of 10 on his way to 16 points.

This is the second loss in a row for Sonora and nudges their season record down to 2-7. As for Murrieta Valley, they are on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five matches, which provided a nice bump to their 7-2 record this season.

Sonora and Colony will face off at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday without much rest having both just played. As for Murrieta Valley, they and Cypress will face off at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday without much rest having both just played. Murrieta Valley knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with 55 points or more in their past nine contests -- so hopefully Cypress likes a good challenge.
