Football Recap: Westlake Wolverines vs. Northern Patriots

Westlake had to kick off their season on the road on Friday, but they showed no ill effects. They enjoyed a cozy 48-33 win over the Northern Patriots. For the Wolverines, this counts as revenge for the 47-7 defeat the Patriots walked away with the last time they faced one another back in September of 2023.

Devin Cox went supernova for Westlake, rushing for 282 yards and four touchdowns while picking up 9.7 yards per carry, and also picking up 38 receiving yards. The dominant performance gave Cox a new career-high in rushing yards. Another player making a difference was William Drakeford Jr, who rushed for 84 yards on only eight carries.

He was just one part of a punishing run game: Westlake was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 385 rushing yards. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Northern only rushed for 122.

Westlake's defense was in the mix too, especially the secondary: they snagged two passes before it was all said and done. The picks came courtesy of James Francis and Braylin Erdolino. Erdolino also put in work on the defensive side of the ball, picking up a sack and making three total tackles (1.0 for loss) in addition to snagging an interception. Timothy (LT) Freelon Iii was another major factor on D, picking up a sack and making 11 total tackles (1.0 for loss).

Several Patriots players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Tyler Collins, who rushed for 111 yards on only ten carries. Collins got the majority of those rushing yards when he took off on a run that went for an incredible 67 yards.

Westlake will take on Calvert at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Northern, they will welcome Lackey at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
