Basketball Recap: Spurger Skates Past Burkeville with Ease

Spurger was handed a heart-breaking two-point loss in their last matchup, but they sure didn't let that happen against Burkeville on Friday. The Spurger Pirates really took it to the Burkeville Mustangs for the full four quarters, racking up a 77-39 victory. The Pirates pushed the score to 62-22 by the end of the third, a deficit the Mustangs cut but never quite recovered from.

Spurger's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Landon Heim led the charge by putting up 21 points. Those 21 points gave Heim a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Joshua Grissom, who posted 16 points.

Despite the defeat, Burkeville saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Marlon Jackson scored 11 points and eight rebounds. Those 11 points set a new season-high mark for Jackson. Another player making a difference was Kort Metts, who put up four points and six boards.

Spurger has been performing well recently as they've won seven of their last nine games, which provided a nice bump to their 14-7 record this season. Those victories came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 59.9 points per game. As for Burkeville, they dropped their record down to 5-15 with the loss, which was their third straight on the road.

Spurger didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 93-10 win against Goodrich on the 28th. As for Burkeville, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next matchup, a 46-19 victory against High Island on the 28th.
