Basketball Recap: Sofia Martinez-Cristancho's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Animas over Alamo Navajo

It was a proper cat-fight when Animas challenged Alamo Navajo on Friday. The Animas Panthers fell 48-40 to the Alamo Navajo Cougars. The Panthers were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Cougars apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in January of 2023.

Animas' defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Sofia Martinez-Cristancho, who posted 11 points in addition to five rebounds and three steals. Martinez-Cristancho is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last three games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Journey Sheehan, who put up six points along with 16 boards and three steals.

Even though they lost, Animas smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 17 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive rebounds in ten consecutive games.

Animas' loss dropped their record down to 6-4. As for Alamo Navajo, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 4-7.

Animas won't have much time to rest: their next match is against Cliff at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday. Cliff will roll in looking for their eighth straight victory, something Animas surely won't give up without a fight. As for Alamo Navajo, they will also get right back to it: they'll challenge Cobre at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday. Alamo Navajo is facing Cobre at the right time seeing as Cobre is stuck on a three-game losing streak.
