Union City is 1-8 against Monroe Central since May of 2015 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Saturday. The Indians will challenge the Golden Bears at 10:00 a.m. Both come into the contest bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Union City is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Wednesday. They put the hurt on Blue River Valley with a sharp 11-5 win. Considering the Indians have won seven matches by more than five runs this season, Wednesday's blowout was nothing new.

Trendon Spence made a big impact no matter where he played. He didn't allow a single earned run over five innings pitched. He also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because Union City is 5-1 when he allows at most three earned runs, but 5-10 otherwise. Spence was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-5 with one home run, six RBI, and two runs. Those six RBI gave him a new career-high.
In other batting news, Caleb Lutz was excellent, getting on base in three of his five plate appearances with two RBI. Another player making a difference was Joseangel Perez-Contreras, who went 1-for-3 with two runs and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Monroe Central had already won three in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 8.3 runs) and they went ahead and made it four on Wednesday. They walked away with a 9-6 victory over the Golden Eagles.
Like Union City, Monroe Central also got a great game from a two-way player: Isaac Middleton. On the mound, he struck out eight batters over four innings while giving up just two earned runs off five hits. Middleton was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two runs and one double.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Lane Wilson, who went 2-for-4 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run. That stolen base was his first of the season. Levi Pence was another key player, getting on base in three of his five plate appearances with one run and one RBI.
Union City has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four games. That's provided a massive bump to their 10-11 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 13.0 runs over those games. As for Monroe Central, they now have a winning record of 14-13.
Union City might still be hurting after the 10-0 loss they got from Monroe Central in their previous matchup back in May of 2022. Can the Indians avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
