Westville had lost three games straight , but after bumping their record up to 14-5 on Thursday that streak is in the rearview. They were the clear victors by a 9-2 margin over the Wheeler Bearcats. The result was nothing new for the Blackhawks, who have now won seven contests by seven runs or more so far this season.
Kierstin Vargas made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 11 batters over seven innings while giving up just two earned runs off six hits (and not a single walk). She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't given up more than two walks in 15 consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three RBI, one run, and one double.
In other batting news, Westville let Miranda Sparks and Maddison Cole run wild. Sparks went 4-for-5 with three runs and two doubles, while Cole went 1-for-3 with one home run and two RBI. That's the most hits Sparks has posted over her last ten games. Kiersten Vaughan was another key player, going 3-for-5 with two runs, one double, and one RBI.
Westville kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 14 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least 13 hits in three consecutive matchups.
As for Wheeler, with the defeat, they broke their six-game winning streak and moved their record to 17-6. They were red-hot at the plate heading into the contest (they scored no less than ten runs in the three games prior), but Westville's pitchers proved too tough.
On Wheeler's side, Cadence Piunti put in work no matter where she played. On the mound, she tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs off three hits. Piunti was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with one stolen base and one double.
In other batting news, Nora Howell was cooking despite her team's loss, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and one double.
Westville didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next matchup, a 10-0 victory against Whiting on the 23rd. Wheeler has also already played their next contest (against Highland), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing.
