Football Recap: Weld Central Rebels vs. Elizabeth Cardinals
Weld Central played a tough matchup on Saturday in which they were outscored in every quarter. They took a blow against the Elizabeth Cardinals, falling 48-12. The Rebels haven't had much luck with the Cardinals recently, as the team has come up short the last three times they've met.
Despite the loss, Weld Central still got an impressive performance from Luke Witzel, who threw for 141 yards and two TDs on only 13 passes, and also rushed for 53 yards.
This one was won in the trenches and the lion's share of the credit has to go to Andrew Martinez and Tristan McCray. Martinez rushed for 119 yards and one score on only 12 carries while McCray rushed for 97 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Those 119 rushing yards gave Martinez a new career-high.
Weld Central's loss dropped their record down to 2-2. As for Elizabeth, their victory was their fifth straight on the road dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 3-1.
Weld Central will have a little extra prep time after the defeat as they won't be playing again for a while. They'll take on Fort Lupton at 7:00 p.m. on October 3. This will be the Rebels' first chance to prove their worth in the conference. As for Elizabeth, they didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next game, a 41-0 win against Pagosa Springs on the 26th.
