Game recap: Taft defeats South East after late score

After taking the lead in the fourth quarter, Taft (Woodland Hills, Calif.) held on for a 26-22 victory over South East (South Gate, Calif.) on Saturday. The difference for the Toreadors was it threw a touchdown.

After trailing 19-14 at the half, the Jaguars went ahead on a touchdown pass by Jonathan Santos to Alex Alvarez with 5:00 left in the third. Taft finally took the lead for good as it threw a touchdown with 6:00 to go in the fourth quarter.

By the end of the third, THS found itself trailing by 3 points as South East captured the lead thanks to two scores in the quarter. SE scored on a Santos touchdown pass to Alvarez and a two-point conversion in the quarter.

The result came as a big surprise as the South Gate school came in ranked No. 289 in the MaxPreps Freeman Rankings for California, while the Woodland Hills school was ranked No. 495.

The Toreadors' standout player in the win was Devon Hawkins. He caught one touchdown.



The Jaguars' Santos was the standout player for his team. The senior quarterback threw three touchdowns. He has now scored four touchdowns on the season.

The win was a nice bounce back for Taft, which lost to Notre Dame last week, 56-0. The loss comes after South East defeated Lynwood 31-14 last week. The loss snapped South East's 3-game winning streak. The victory snapped THS's 3-game losing streak.

In a Eastern game next week South East (3-1) takes on Jordan, and Taft (1-3) will go up against Saugus in a non-conference game.
