Recap: New Deal Lions vs. Olton Mustangs
The New Deal Lions entered their tilt with the Olton Mustangs with three consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with four. New Deal took their game at home on Friday with ease, bagging a 56-21 victory over Olton. Considering New Deal has won three matchups by more than 34 points this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead New Deal to victory, but perhaps none more so than Slade Martin, who rushed for 162 yards and three touchdowns while picking up 7.4 yards per carry. Martin is on a roll when it comes to solo tackles, as he's now made six or more in the last four games he's played. Another player making a difference was Dallas Sumner, who threw for 254 yards and four touchdowns while completing 90.5% of his passes.
Another reason for the win was New Deal's imposing defense, which managed to get into the backfield for seven sacks. The heavy lifting was done by Konner Vasquez and Bryson Houston who racked up four sacks between them.
Despite the loss, Olton saw an underclassman step up: Isaiah Ruiz rushed for 246 yards and a touchdown while picking up 8.8 yards per carry. Ruiz was no stranger to the big play, turning on the jets for a run that went for 50 yards. The team also got some help courtesy of Raymond Ramirez, who rushed for 118 yards and a touchdown on only 14 carries.
New Deal has been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six matches, which provided a nice bump to their 6-3 record this season. As for Olton, their loss dropped their record down to 7-2.
New Deal will head out on the road to face off against Sundown at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Olton, they will be playing at home against Tahoka at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
