Baseball Recap: Palo Alto Gets the Win

Palo Alto won the last time they faced Homestead and things went their way on Wednesday too. The Vikings sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 6-5 win over the Mustangs.

Ian Johnston looked comfortable as he pitched three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two hits in five consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Coco Vonderhaar, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with three stolen bases and three runs. He is becoming a predictor of Palo Alto's success: when he posts at least two stolen bases the team is undefeated (and 7-12 when he doesn't). Justin Fung also deserves some recognition as he hit his first double of the season.

Palo Alto pushed their record up to 11-12 with the victory, which was their third straight on the road. Those road wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.0 runs on average over those games. As for Homestead, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost seven of their last eight matchups. That's put a noticeable dent in their 10-13 record this season.

Palo Alto will have a chance to go back-to-back against Homestead: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled at 4:00 p.m. on Friday.
