South Central is 0-10 against Monroeville since May of 2021 but things could change on Wednesday. The Trojans will take on the Eagles at 4:00 p.m. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, these teams will really light up the scoreboard.
South Central came out on top against Chippewa on Saturday thanks in part to the team's impressive seven-run fifth inning. The Trojans never let the Chipps get on the board and left with a 10-0 victory.
Viola Culler made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run over five innings pitched. Culler was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run.
In other batting news, South Central got a massive performance out of Ember Phillips, who got on base in all four of her plate appearances with three stolen bases, one run, and one RBI. That's the most stolen bases Phillips has posted since back in April of 2024. Another player making a difference was Mayson Middaugh, who got on base in three of her four plate appearances with four stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Monroeville entered their tilt with Carey on Thursday with two consecutive wins, and they'll enter their next game with three. They were the clear victors by an 11-2 margin over the Blue Devils. The result was nothing new for the Eagles, who have now won 15 matches by seven runs or more so far this season.
Veanna Helmstetter spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and one unearned) run on five hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in 22 consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Taryn Tyler was incredible, going a perfect 4-for-4 with two stolen bases, three runs, and three RBI. She is on a roll when it comes to hits, as she's now got three or more in each of the last three games she's played. Madison Reiber was another key player, going 2-for-4 with one triple, two RBI, and one run.
Monroeville kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least 12 hits in three consecutive contests.
South Central's record is now 9-17. As for Monroeville, their record now sits at 22-3.
Wednesday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. South Central hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .315. However, it's not like Monroeville struggles in that department as they've averaged .390. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
South Central suffered a grim 14-3 defeat to Monroeville in their previous matchup back in April. Can the Trojans avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
