Baseball Recap: Botkins Turns Things Around After Road Loss

There's no place like home for Botkins, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Thursday. They blew past the Waynesfield-Goshen Tigers 9-0 on Saturday. The Trojans have seen this before: they got the W the last time they saw the Tigers, too.

Corey Koenig was a major factor no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run while striking out six over seven innings pitched. He also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because Botkins is 2-1 when he allows at most one earned run, but 3-6 otherwise. Koenig was also big at the plate, getting on base in three of his five plate appearances with three stolen bases, two RBI, and one run. Those three stolen bases gave him a new career-high.

In other batting news, Jay Wildermuth was a standout: he got on base in all four of his plate appearances with two RBI and one run. Levi Frey was another key player, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with two runs, one triple, and one stolen base.

Botkins always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .513. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their OBP total in three consecutive matchups.

Botkins pushed their record up to 5-7 with the victory, which was their fourth straight at home. The home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 7.3 runs over those games. As for Waynesfield-Goshen, they have been struggling recently as they've lost five of their last six contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 3-7 record this season.

Botkins will face off against Fort Loramie at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. As for Waynesfield-Goshen, they will square off against Perry at 5:00 p.m. on Monday.
