Preview: Granite Hills Eagles vs. Mission Viejo Diablos
The Granite Hills Eagles will be staying on the road on Friday to face off against the Mission Viejo Diablos at 7:00 p.m. on December 1st. Both teams have allowed few points on average, (Granite Hills: 16.7, Mission Viejo: 16.9) so any points scored will be well earned.
With a playoff game on the line, Granite Hills rose to the challenge two weeks ago. They won a contest that couldn't have been any closer, slipping by the Hornets 27-26. That's two games straight that Granite Hills has won by exactly a single point.
Granite Hills can attribute much of their success to Zachary Benitez, who threw for 224 yards and two touchdowns, and Josh Zander, who picked up 116 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Zander's longest reception was for an incredible 86 yards.
Meanwhile, Mission Viejo and Servite (ranked 76 and 93 in the MaxPreps national rankings respectively) squared off in a high-profile match. Mission Viejo enjoyed a cozy 34-15 victory over Servite on Saturday. The victory was familiar territory for Mission Viejo who now have six in a row.
Mission Viejo's success was spearheaded by the efforts of Vance Spafford, who picked up 145 receiving yards and two touchdowns, and Luke Fahey, who threw for 156 yards and three touchdowns on only ten passes. Spafford has been hot recently, having posted 100 or more receiving yards the last four times he's played.
Granite Hills' victory bumped their record up to 12-0. As for Mission Viejo, their victory was their fourth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 11-3.
