Natalia and Lytle are an even 5-5 against one another since February of 2020, but likely not for long. The Mustangs are taking a road trip to square off against the Pirates at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Natalia is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8 runs per game this season.
Natalia proved they can win big on Friday (they won by 13) and on Tuesday they proved they can win the close ones too. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 4-3 victory over Hondo. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Mustangs have posted since February 28th.
Arabella Gallegos spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered three runs (all of which were unearned) on seven hits.
At the plate, Natalia's victory was truly a team effort as four different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Leyla Saenz, who scored a run while going 3-for-5.
Natalia hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. The team has now struck out at least three strikeouts batters in six consecutive matches.
Meanwhile, Lytle entered their tilt with Crystal City on Tuesday with two consecutive wins, and they'll enter their next game with three. They blew past the Javelinas 10-2. The Pirates might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won eight games by eight runs or more this season.
Lytle also let their pitcher toss all seven innings and she was also dialed-in: Claire Canales gave up two runs (both of which were unearned) on six hits. Canales has been consistent : she hasn't given up more than two walks in five consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Giselle Esparza was incredible, going 3-for-4 with two stolen bases, three RBI, and two runs. What's more, she posted two doubles, the most she's had since back in March of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of ADDISON CRIADO, who scored two runs while going 2-for-4.
Natalia's record now sits at 17-6-1. As for Lytle, their record is now 10-8-1.
Friday's contest might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Natalia has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .479. However, it's not like Lytle struggles in that department as they've averaged .451. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Natalia took their win against Lytle in their previous matchup two weeks ago by a conclusive 11-5 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Mustangs since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
