Baseball Preview: Maclay Marauders vs. Leon Lions

The Maclay Marauders will head out on the road to face off against the Leon Lions at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. Both come into the game bolstered by wins in their previous matches.

Maclay took a loss when they played away from home on Saturday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Thursday. They came out on top against Seabreeze by a score of 8-3.

Henry Richardson made a big impact no matter where he played. On the mound, he pitched 3.1 innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. He has been consistent : he hasn't given up more than two walks in five consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, scoring two runs and stealing Three bases. while going 1-for-4. Those three stolen bases gave him a new career-high.

Richardson wasn't the only one making solid contact as four players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Noah Chavez, who scored two runs and stole Three bases. while going 3-for-4. The dominant performance gave Chavez a new career-high in stolen bases. Tucker Poppell also deserves some recognition as he snagged his first stolen base of the season.

Meanwhile, after low-scoring totals in their previous three contests, Leon brought some dynamite into their most recent contest. They never let Seabreeze get on the board and left with a 10-0 win on Wednesday. Considering the Lions have won eight matches by more than six runs this season, Wednesday's blowout was nothing new.

Connor Borges made a splash while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run over six innings pitched. Borges was also stellar in the batter's box, scoring three runs and stealing a base while going 3-for-3.

In other batting news, Baker Safley was incredible, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 2-for-4. Leon is 7-1 when Safley posts two or more runs, but 3-4 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Kolbe Baker, who scored a run while going 2-for-4.

Leon was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .483. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Seabreeze only posted a batting average of .200.

The victory snapped Leon's losing streak at five games and leaves them with a 10-5 record. As for Maclay, their record now sits at 8-4.

The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Saturday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Maclay has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.2 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Leon struggles in that department as they've been averaging 6.9 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.

Maclay might still be hurting after the 13-1 loss they got from Leon in their previous meeting back in April of 2023. Can Maclay avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
