Baseball Recap: Highland Tech's Win on Monday Extends Winning Streak to Five

Highland Tech entered their tilt with Ashbrook on Monday with four consecutive wins, and they'll enter their next game with five. They were the clear victors by a 9-1 margin over the Greenwave. That's the third time they've managed to beat them this season, with their most recent victory being a 11-4 win back in March.

Erwing Soza made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He didn't allow a single earned run while striking out nine over six innings pitched. He also tossed a walk, which is notable because Highland Tech is 5-1 when he allows at most one walk, but 5-8 otherwise. Soza was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with two stolen bases and two runs. He is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as he's now snagged at least one in each of the last four games he's played.

In other batting news, Coleman Schafer was excellent, going 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, two RBI, and one run. That's the most stolen bases he has posted since back in March. Another player making a difference was Brandon Rice, who earned two runs and two stolen bases.

Highland Tech pushed their record up to 10-9 with the victory, which was their third straight at home. Those home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.7 runs on average over those games. As for Ashbrook, their defeat dropped their record down to 4-14.

Highland Tech and Ashbrook could both be facing uphill battles in their next games considering their disadvantage in the MaxPreps North Carolina Rankings. The Rams (ranked 325th) will meet North Gaston (ranked 107th) at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Ashbrook will square off against South Point at 6:00 p.m. on the 29th with a big rank disadvantage (443 vs. 144).
