Baseball Game Preview: Edisto Cougars vs. Branchville Yellow Jackets

The Edisto Cougars will square off against the Branchville Yellow Jackets at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Edisto is coming into the contest hot, having won their last four games.

Edisto had to skate by with only a two-run margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the 12-run drubbing they dealt Whale Branch on Tuesday. Everything went Edisto's way against Whale Branch as Edisto made off with a 12-0 victory. That looming 12-0 mark stands out as the most commanding margin for the Cougars yet this season.

Max Dempsey was a major factor no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out 12 over five innings pitched. Furthermore, he didn't allow a single earned run, the first time he has blanked an opponent since back in April of 2024. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with one triple, two RBI, and one double. That triple marked the first that he hit this season.

In other batting news, Edisto let Billy Hardy and Michael Myers run wild. Hardy scored a run while going 3-for-3, while Myers scored two runs and stole a base while going 2-for-4. Those three hits gave Hardy a new career-high. Grady Bearden was another key player, scoring two runs while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances.

Edisto kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 15 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits in four consecutive matches.

Branchville played against Palmetto Scholars Academy on Tuesday and won via forfeit.

Branchville's win ended a six-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 1-5. As for Edisto, their record now sits at 4-2.

Edisto came up short against Branchville in their previous meeting back in April of 2024, falling 11-8. Can Edisto avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
