Baseball Recap: Coventry Has No Trouble Against Portland

Coventry got themselves on the board against Portland on Monday, but Portland never followed suit. They were the clear victors by an 11-0 margin over the Highlanders. With that win, the Patriots brought their scoring average up to 6.3 runs per game.

Kevin Johnson made a splash no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only two hits while striking out six over four innings pitched. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in three consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, getting on base in two of his three plate appearances with two stolen bases and two runs. Those two stolen bases gave him a new career-high.

In other batting news, Coventry let Kyle Hecht and Matteo Albano run wild. Hecht went a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI, while Albano went 2-for-3 with three stolen bases and two runs. That's the most hits Hecht has posted since back in May of 2024. Another player making a difference was Mather Spear, who got on base in all three of his plate appearances with two runs and one stolen base.

Coventry hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. The team has now struck out at least three batters in three consecutive games.

Coventry has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 8-6 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.8 runs over those games. As for Portland, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 6-9.

Looking ahead, Coventry will be playing in front of their home fans against Windsor Locks at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. The Patriots are facing the Raiders at the right time seeing as the Raiders are stuck on a three-game losing streak. As for Portland, they have already played their next contest, a 3-2 loss against Morgan on the 13th.
