High school volleyball rankings: Postseason upsets shake up MaxPreps Top 25 while No. 1 Cathedral Catholic keeps rolling

Top-ranked Dons face No. 5 Mira Costa in Southern California Open Division Regional final on Tuesday.

The agony and the ecstasy of high school volleyball playoffs was in full display this past week. Champions were crowned while upsets sent others into the offseason.

One thing, however, has remained constant — No. 1 Cathedral Catholic (San Diego, Calif.) continues its blitz through anyone and everyone in its path. The Dons, who haven't dropped a set despite a grueling national schedule, straight-setted Lakewood and Torrey Pines (San Diego) to reach the Southern California Open Division Regional final Tuesday against Mira Costa (Manhattan Beach). The Dons are two wins from the state title and possible MaxPreps National Championship.

Mira Costa advanced to the SoCal finals after outlasting Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth) in a five-set battle royale. Tuesday's winner gets the victor between No. 11 Saint Francis (Mountain View) and No. 17 Archbishop Mitty (San Jose).

Elsewhere, postseason play took out three Texas Class 6A teams in the MaxPreps Top 25 as Highland Park (Dallas), Byron Nelson (Trophy Club) and Plano West (Plano) all fell in regional play. The lone 6A ranked team is No. 4 Tompkins (Katy), which has a Friday date with Dripping Springs in the final four.

Among the title winners this weekend were No. 9 Mother McAuley (Chicago), which downed Benet Academy (Lisle) 2-1 for the Illinois 4A title. Michigan commit Ellie White was sensational in powering the Might Macs to their 16th state crown. Wayzata (Plymouth) saw its 65-game win streak snapped earlier this season, but rebounded to win the Minnesota 4A title, the third in four years for the Trojans (they didn't play in 2020 because of COVID). Ohio's Ursuline Academy (Cincinnati) and Arizona's Corona del Sol (Tempe) and Horizon (Scottsdale) also join the rankings after winning the Arizona 6A and 5A titles, respectively.
