Baseball Recap: Columbia Has No Trouble Against Lawrence County

Two teams were on the hunt for playoff glory, but only Columbia walked away with it. They put the hurt on the Lawrence County Cougars with a sharp 16-1 win on Friday. The victory continues a trend for the Wildcats in their matchups with the Cougars: they've now won nine in a row.

MT Breland was a major factor no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over six innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits. That's the most strikeouts he has posted since back in March. He was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with three RBI, two doubles, and one stolen base. He has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last four times he's played.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Brayden Thornhill, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with one home run and three runs. Columbia is undefeated when Thornhill posts two or more runs, but 9-10 otherwise. Patrick Peters was another key player, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with three runs and one RBI.

Columbia pushed their record up to 16-10 with the win, which was their third straight on the road. Those road victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 13.7 runs over those games. As for Lawrence County, their defeat ended a six-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 12-11.

The teams didn't have to wait long for a rematch: Columbia beat the Cougars by a score of 5-2 on Saturday.
