Baseball Recap: Friona Comes Up Short

After flying high against West Texas last Saturday, Friona came back down to earth. The Friona Chieftans took an 8-3 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Olton Mustangs on Monday. The Chieftans were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Mustangs apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in February of 2024.

Friona got a good showing from Mason Ramos, who pitched four innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off four hits.

At the plate, Aiden Tafoya and Owen McGaughy stepped up to the plate in a big way. Tafoya scored a run and stole three bases while getting on base in two of his four plate appearances, while McGaughy went 3-for-4 with one stolen base and two RBI.

Friona dropped their record down to 1-3 with the defeat, which was their seventh straight on the road dating back to last season. As for Olton, the win got them back to even at 1-1.

Looking ahead, Friona will be taking part in a tournament against Lamesa at 9:00 a.m. on Friday. As for Olton, they will take on O'Donnell in a tournament on Saturday.
