Baseball Game Preview: Basic Wolves vs. Orange Lutheran Lancers

The Basic Wolves will take on the Orange Lutheran Lancers at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.

The scorekeeper got an easy start on Thursday as neither Basic nor Bishop Gorman made it on the board until the sixth inning. The Wolves fell just short of the Gaels by a score of 3-2.

Johnny Villarreal was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits over five innings pitched.

At the plate, Basic saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Matthew Kelley, who got on base in all three of his plate appearances with one RBI.

Meanwhile, Orange Lutheran had to kick off their season on the road on Friday, but they showed no ill effects. Their pitchers stepped up to hand Crespi a 10-0 shutout.

Gary Morse tossed a big game, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only one hit while striking out eight over five innings pitched.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Brady Murrietta, who went 2-for-4 with three runs, one triple, and one stolen base. What's more, he posted two RBI, the most he's had since back in March of 2025. The team also got some help courtesy of C.J. Weinstein, who got on base in three of his five plate appearances with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run.

Basic came up short against Orange Lutheran in their previous meeting back in March of 2025, falling 6-1. Can the Wolves avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
